Participation through technology

tl; dr: Central is the purpose behind the goal of opening the door: movement and social participation. The solution, the goal was achieved with, is of secondary importance.

Carla M. shows our first case, that is documented by video in WiQQi. The prerequisite for this process was the absolute voluntariness and the critical reflection of the project with the involvement of many "ciritical friends". The importance of context-sensitive problem solving can be illustrated in this individual case: Where in other cases a monthly battery change would be inacceptable (e.g. due to the process costs or loss of comfort) this criterion takes a back seat in the case of Carla M. The focus is on the purpose to be achieved: achieving participation and movement goals.


The decisive factor in the selection of the Nuki Smart Lock (+ Fob) was the use of the experience of our technology partners (especially dimensions that we cannot check ourselves, such as data protection) and the following criteria:


  • Burglary protection: The solution must be comparable to the existing solution. We are aware that there is no such thing as "absolute" security.
  • Retrofittability: The solution must be retrofittable - the existing key must be able to continue to be used. (We still had to replace the cylinder because it cannot hold a key as a knob cylinder on the inside of the door)
  • Emergency function: The door should still be able to be opened from the inside using a knob.


Experience:

  • Changing the battery: Depending on the force exerted on the lock, between 1 month (experience with a rough-running lock) and 6 months (manufacturer information).
  • Radio range: Radio range problems of the FOB transponder of the first generation have been remedied by the revision of the FOB (as of 1.3.2018).
  • Number of locks per key: The first generation FOB can only operates one lock - this has been remedied by the revision of the FOB. It can now handle 100 locks.


Further thoughts:

  • User management: Is it possible to (regular / one-time) access by time window e.g. for nursing staff and craftsmen?
  • Remote control: Is it possible to control the door by a house emergency call center if the key is lost or in an emergency? - How is abuse potential dealt with?
  • Door types: Does the lock fit the door? American doors are constructed differently than the usual ones in Germany.
  • Scaling risks: What are the risks of abuse if a large number of people use the same solution?
  • Maintenance: Who changes the batteries, how often, on what occasion (is there a battery status indicator? Are empirical values used?)
  • Administration: Who manages the keys / access?
