Why is WiQQi concerned with 360 ° photography?

360 ° documentation enables quick documentation in the consultation.


WiQQi deals with 360 ° technologies, also under the term "tele care". In the individual case consultation, we had taken 2D and 360 ° photos of a consultation object for research purposes and in consultation with the persons concerned. When the research raised the question of whether a floor-ceiling pole can be used, a glance at the 360 ° photo was sufficient to determine that the ceiling was neither suspended nor paneled. So we had a benefit from the implicitly documented information.

In our 360° tours we combine the knowledge from the WiQQi database with real rooms. This is how we make knowledge about spatial access tangible.

In addition to the ethical and technical questions and limits already known from 2D documentation, there are further ones that derive from the more extensive documentation of implicit knowledge.

What is WiQQi's contribution to “digitization”?

WiQQi uses data processing methods to strengthen individualization and needs-based nursing and care in the field of care and technology.

For WiQQi, "digitization in nursing and care" means supporting the aspects of sustainability and needs-based. Because: Where previously the multitude and variety of (technical) solutions could hardly be mastered, WiQQi would like to bring the required knowledge into the situation with "ready-to-eat" knowledge.


We want us to keep the essential goals in life - especially social participation and movement - within reach. Sometimes there are the big service packages (be it the hotel or the residential care) that stabilize the resource tower. And sometimes it can be tips and tricks.

Through the professional and ethical reflection, as well as criteria-oriented and reasoned decision, we want in the Citizen Science approach:

Communication and consulting approach: method of principled negotiation

WiQQi uses the method of principled negotiation both in advice and in crisis communication. This concept is prepared on the WiQQi beer mat as a guiding instrument and central method for everyday use.

For communication in WiQQi, the method of principled negotiation (→ Wikipedia) has proven itself both in advice and in internal dialogue. We implement the four principles as follows:

Separate people and problems or relationship and factual levels
We strive to separate the factual, substantive, rational level from the relationship and emotion-related, emotional level. The factual problem situation is repeatedly the reason for a dialogue. Before we look at the matter, however, it is important for us to make sure that we have a good level of relationship. It also means not reducing a person to a problem.

Focus on interests, not positions or viewpoints
The orientation towards common goals and interests supports us in leaving our own point of view. Even the discussion about the common goals and interests can help to develop a new, third point of view:
If you want to achieve a goal, you have to change your point of view - or wait until the goal has reached your own point of view.

Develop alternative options
We have found that options for action can be as confusing as they are helpful: They require us to be clear about what is required. We strive to diversify the variety and variety of options as widely as possible. WiQQi relies on a variety of perspectives: the more perspectives and biographies look at a question, the broader the approaches can be.

Strive for impartial assessment criteria

What is the meaning of criteria in WiQQi?

In Criteria are bundling the experience of us nurses and carers. Criteria provide the reasoned reason for choosing a solution.

A criterion is a characteristic (e.g. weight/color) that can be used to differentiate between different solutions, problems or objekctives. A prerequisite for this is the description of the characteristics of a characteristic (e.g. 100g, 1kg, 10kg/red, green, blue). One criterion and its characteristics are always descriptive and not judging.

Every judgement a decision is based on, is context-sensitive. The expression "3kg" has a completely different meaning for a bass - depending on whether you are talking about a fish or a guitar. The meaning of the color can also differ - especially if there is a color defect.

In WiQQi, criteria have the following meaning:

  • Description of needs: The specification of criteria allows the need to be described more precisely in the individual case. This description includes the Assessment of relevance: is a criterion relevant or not?
    • Rating of relevance: Why is a criterion relevant or not?
    • Expression of the criterion: Does the expression have to assume a certain value, exceed or fall below it or have a tendency?
    • Reason for the expression of a criterion: Why exactly does the criterion have to accept this expression?
  • Description of solutions: The naming of criteria and their characteristics can describe solutions in detail? WiQQi starts from the dimensions of the individual case and limits the documentation of solutions to what is sufficient or necessary for the individual case. Other versions of a solution can be added in further individual cases.
  • Comparison of solution and requirement: How does a solution meet needs?
    • A perfect fit: a problem is solved and/or a line is reached without changing the resources used
    • Resources are released: A solution helps resources to be mined or otherwise used.
    • Additional resources are required: A solution helps resources to be built up or otherwise withdrawn.
  • Ready-to-eat knowledge: Criteria can combine experience and knowledge in a form that can be used in a situation. We call this "ready-to-eat knowledge":
    • Needs assessment: Requirements from past cases can be applied to new cases using the criteria.
    • Solution selection: Solutions tailored to requirements can be filtered out of the bulk of the solutions based on criteria. This reduces the research effort.
    • Reasoned decision: Decisions can be justified by comparing needs and solutions. Effects on resources can be thought ahead and accompanying measures can be initiated.

What are solutions from the perspective of WiQQi?

Solutions are all things and actions that solve a problem and/or lead to the goal. In development, we initially focus on solutions in the sense of objective technology.

In WiQQi, solutions are all things and actions that can help to solve a problem and / or to achieve a goal.

In the development of WiQQi, we focus on objective technology. We do not hide actions or tips and tricks to solve a problem. However, we want to avoid emotional or social conflict before we know how to deal with it. This can be the case with highly subjective participation when it comes to choosing the right words, the right attitude or the tone of the conversation. Especially when the time for reflection is influenced by the setting or the situation. This makes it easier to talk about a needs-based night light than about having a conversation in a crisis situation.

  • Solutions are researched and collected based on the specific individual case.
  • Documenting solutions in the WiQQi database relieves the burden on several levels:
    • When solving the first individual case, solutions can be included and excluded or prioritized using criteria.
    • Solutions can be added and updated collaboratively.
    • Solutions can be supplemented or updated when processing further, similar individual cases.

Citizen Science

Why is WiQQi a Citizen Science project?

WiQQi is a citizen science project in nursing. Citizen Science comes in different forms. WiQQi uses the entire spectrum. From collaboration (Citizen Science "light") to a comprehensive research approach and method development (Citizen Science "proper"). Mutual support is key: We have found that a tip that is passed on in a nutshell can save days or weeks of work. And we know that if we support each other in our work, we can do much more than alone.

How does WiQQi rate solutions?

WiQQi evaluates lighting solutions as such, but rather their suitability for use in individual cases.

There is no "good" or "bad" solution per se. - The decisive factor is whether a solution fits the problem-target-resource constellation. In the WiQQi approach, an assessment uses criteria to refer to a specific context. This means that assessments in WiQQi mediate between generally applicable rule knowledge (criteria) and situational case understanding (context-related assessment). (Continuing: "Doppelte Handlungslogik in der Pflege"). This means that ratings in WiQQi are always criteria-oriented and justified.

As part of ethical and professional reflection, WiQQi always asks why exactly one solution is spontaneously rated as "good" or "bad". From this, criteria can be derived that can be transferred to other cases as general rule knowledge.

Why and how does WiQQi fan out solutions?

Solutions are collaboratively fanned out to broaden your view.

WiQQi fans out different approaches to show the range of possible solutions. We are thus dealing with the problem of "functional fixation". Broadening approaches can mean that we are looking for approaches that deal with the causes of a problem - or approaches that take into account the effects.

  • Problem/objective: Sometimes we face the problem that the apple we want hangs too high in the tree.
    • Causal solutions would deal with eliminating the height difference. By climbing, a ladder, an arm extension or with long-term consequences by cutting down the tree.
    • Question symptomatic solutions, why we want to reach this apple. The focus can also be based on the fact that we saw the apple first. But the purpose is that we just want to satisfy hunger. In this case, it is worthwhile to see whether there are apples attainable height. Maybe there is an accessible apple hidden behind the leaves or on the floor?

WiQQi is looking for different solution options because this provides clarity about the problem and the goal. This broadens the view of ethical and professional reflection. Solution approaches should be as different as possible. The solutions within an approach should be similar:

  • Diversity: The full range of possible solutions can be compared - this makes fundamental questions visible.
  • Similarities: Similar solutions can be compared - detailed questions become visible.
  • Diversity of perspectives: Solutions can be conceived or tested in different contexts - this makes fundamental and detailed questions visible.

For all the benefits, fanning out also means more effort. So that the work remains manageable for the individual, we work together and always fall back on the work once done:

  • Collaboration: Someone always knows a good solution to a problem.
  • Sustainability: We collect existing solutions in the WiQQi database. The more solutions we have collected in the database, the faster the fan-out will work. In the database, all solutions are assigned to a problem-target-resource constellation, i.e. we can learn from other cases with similar problems, similar goals, or similar resources. Just like we do it in real life.

Important questions are:

  • Problem analysis: What are the experiences from other cases? What have we overlooked so far? Which questions are still open?
  • Clarification of objectives: Is the objective formulated in an understandable way? Can it be measured? What misunderstandings does our wording entail?
  • Research: Which search terms are still missing? Which could help?
  • Experience: Which solutions have already proven themselves in similar cases or have they failed? Which solutions could be transferred to the case to be solved? What do we have to pay attention to?
  • Criteria: Which decision-making criteria can be derived from existing experience? How are the criteria formulated to guide decisions?

Why are criteria so important in WiQQi?

Criteria bundle experience and mediate between need and solution.

Criteria are one way of deciding between different solution options. In WiQQi we use the following options to collect criteria:

  • One way to collect criteria is to compare similar solutions.
  • Another possibility is to compare different solutions.
  • There is also the possibility of using a solution in different contexts.

Criteria are both a result and an instrument for professional and ethical reflection. They mediate between the specific needs in individual cases and the multitude of possible solutions. They bundle the experience we have had as "ready-to-eat knowledge":

  • Criteria help to justify spontaneous evaluations: Why exactly was a solution "good" or "bad"? Because it was "too easy" or "too heavy".
  • Criteria help to describe the need more precisely in individual cases, because they describe requirements that a solution must meet. [e.g. Weight> 5kg]
  • Criteria help to evaluate solutions because they can be measured [e.g. 10kg]
  • Criteria combine a specific individual case with possible solutions: "Include all solutions that weigh > 5kg".
  • Criteria justify the decision: "We only used solutions that weigh > 5kg because all other solutions are too light."


What ist the lab in WiQQi?

Solutions are researched in the laboratory, requested for (free, permanent) sampling, tried out and prepared for the media. It aims to reduce implementation barriers and develop criteria.

Similar and different solutions are compared in the laboratory. This creates a basis of knowledge and experience. On this basis, criteria are formulated and concepts and methods are developed.
The laboratory is a protected test environment. Here the use of solutions is simulated and reality is thought ahead. In this way, we can relieve practice together. The tasks of the laboratory are:

  • Familiarization: We work into solutions centrally and adapt the solutions to the specific individual case that needs to be solved. So we are gaining initial experience.
  • Diversity of perspectives: The person who has worked in can present the solution (or solutions) to other people. These people benefit from the first experience - and can also contribute their perspective and experience.
  • Range and limits: The aim of the laboratory is to work out the range and limits of a solution.
  • Documentation: We particularly like to document via video - this makes knowledge easy to share.
  • Criteria: Particularly important findings are brought to the point in the form of criteria and discussed together.

The laboratory is currently based in the WiQQi studio. In the future there are further laboratory locations that are characterized by the fact that cases are systematically processed and organized there.

What ist the Citizens Laboratory in WiQQi?

After the laboratory phase, the sample solutions are packed in a box and sent to cooperating locations. Errors and gaps from the laboratory are recognized and findings confirmed and deepened. The citizens' laboratory aims to systematically and quickly obtain the assessment of 100 people.

The Citizens Laboratory is the critical authority for the laboratory. It stands for diversity of perspectives and large numbers of cases in the area. In the Citizens Laboratory, criteria and concepts are checked for comprehensibility and gaps. Missing solutions are supplemented cooperatively and collaboratively.
Practical evidence is created in the Citizens Laboratory because solutions are tested, applied and reflected on using a uniform method. Criteria can be supplemented and condensed from the impulsive assessment in the context of different life situations and biographies. Practice shows whether the experience from the laboratory really applies. It shows whether the range and the limits of a solution were correctly assessed. It shows where the reflection and the criteria-based justification for a needs-based solution were appropriate - and where it was wrong or left gaps.

  • Practical test: The Citizens Laboratory tests solutions in the concrete individual case of the initial situation.
  • Scaling: The Citizens Laboratory also tests solutions in other, similar cases.
  • Evaluation: The decision-making criteria can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of a solution - if not, the criterion can be evaluated, improved, supplemented or condensed.
  • Practical Evidence: The Citizens Laboratory is thus gaining practical experience - and helps us to create facts of assessment in addition to criteria as a reflection tool.

Citizens' laboratories form a dense network around and between the laboratory locations. Citizens' laboratories are characterized by the fact that they can plan solutions in a compact time and test solutions with a group of people.

What ist the real laboratory in WiQQi?

A solution is used permanently in the real laboratory and its long-term effects can be examined. By considering similar cases, the real laboratory depicts the diverse complexity of the individual case. It aims to generate extensive and long-term evidence.

In the interplay, the laboratory and the Citizens Laboratory complement each other. In the vision of WiQQi, they are brought together in real laboratories. The aim is to evaluate solutions in real situations in a methodically controlled and comprehensible manner. This enables impact measurement with large numbers.

In the laboratory and Citizens Laboratory, we can not only develop new knowledge together. By using the knowledge e.g. sharing via social media, we also have the opportunity to learn from other people who already have in-depth experience with a problem or with a solution. In the vision, we work in WiQQi so networked that we have direct and fast extensive experience that is methodically controlled and comprehensible, e.g .:

  • Frequency: How often does a problem occur?
  • Specification: What are the characteristics of a problem?
  • Solutions: Which solutions solve the problem?
  • Effects: What are the desired or undesirable effects of these solutions?

Reaching real laboratories systematically is currently still a visionary part of WiQQi.Real laboratories could be reached via the home care actors, counseling facilities or on their own via social media. Like all aspects of WiQQi, the desired and undesirable effects of this approach must be reflected on ethically and professionally (including legal dimensions).

Why does WiQQi use the term "Citizen Science"?

The term "Citizen Science" was suggested to us after three years of development in conversation about what we do. WiQQi uses the term to methodically locate itself as a project.

Citizen Science has the meaning of lay-science or non-institutional science. All translated terms have meanings because WiQQi primarily addresses professional care. Professional nurses are not laypeople - and are usually affiliated to institutions. And people in need of care and relatives are often experts on their own behalf. That is why we use the original term in WiQQi: Citizen Science.

  • With the term "Citizen Sicence" we want to open up space for misunderstandings and their clarification.
  • We do not want to reduce any misunderstandings that have been spoken to or expressed as well as unresolved.

What is the relationship between citizen science and institutional research?

WiQQi sees Citizen Science as independent, non-institutional, full-fledged research. This research is complementary to institutional research.

WiQQi is all-party and seeks the technically and ethically reflective, criteria-oriented discourse. Citizen Sicence is:

  • Independent: Citizen Science is independent of institutional research.
  • Complementary: WiQQi sees itself as a complementary and connecting element to institutional research.

Citizen science can be differentiated into two basic meanings (see Finke 2014, pp. 42-43, see Follett and Strezov 2015, p. 2):

  • Citizen Science light means a dependent form of science. In this model, institutional research assumes that it has to plan, evaluate and control the work of laypeople.
  • Citizen Science proper, on the other hand, is a self-sufficient form of science. It is firmly anchored in society. The layperson does not need control through institutional research.



WiQQi sees itself as a Citizen Science proper,
as self-sufficient. It is about gathering the knowledge and experience that are relevant to daily practice. We want to think about problems and solutions together. Participation in WiQQi is voluntary and ranges from a one-off brief reference (e.g. to a typing error) to the design of methods and projects.
The idea of WiQQi comes from practice. The development and design of WiQQi is determined by practice.

We have research institutes - why do we need Citizen Science?

Citizen Science complements institutional research. WiQQi aims for an immediate benefit for care. WiQQi deals with topics that research cannot address.

Finke (2014, p. 59; 2018, p. 32) uses, among other things, the metaphor of an apple tree to explain Citizen Science:

  • The apples stand for the knowledge we strive for. The fact that apples hang in different places says nothing about their quality. However, it lets you estimate how much effort it will take to harvest the apple. There are apples that can be reached from the ground. And there are apples that can only be reached with a ladder or with great effort.
  • The ladder stands for complicated scientific devices and methods, such as those used in institutional science (e.g. in basic research). Citizen Science, on the other hand, strives for simple methods. Citizen Science does not strive for the highest level of accuracy - just the precision and resilience required to master everyday life.

Following this metaphor, we take care of the obvious knowledge in WiQQi. The obvious thing can be invisible - until we become aware of it through a problem. We use this attention and make the obvious obvious through a variety of perspectives. Research in WiQQi begins when problems arise in a specific individual case. We have to deal with these problems in practice anyway - WiQQi offers a clear immediate benefit in the solution phase for little additional effort in the analysis phase:

  • WiQQi requires documentation of the problem as the basis for collaboration. In the short term, this means additional work.
  • However, this documentation leads to two immediate benefits:
    • On the one hand, the problem is clarified by the in-depth analysis and thus more easily solved.
    • On the other hand, the documented analysis enables the possibility of contributing other, possible solutions.
  • The second, similar case shows a sustainable benefit:
    • You can build on the previous research.
    • The previous search is updated in a new case.

What are the obvious findings WiQQi focuses on?

Findings are "obvious" when current problem awareness meets extensive experience. The obvious insights are what both parties learn when experienced and less experienced people share new questions.

For WiQQi, the obvious knowledge lies in the problems of the specific individual case. We make use of the fact that acute problem situations are perceived very clearly. We combine this clear perception with the distance that previous experiences can bring. In the dialogue of both parties, acute problems help to bundle and accentuate experiences. Because: the specific individual case confronts experiences with the specific context and the specific feedback of a person concerned. This creates criteria for a needs-based solution. WiQQi thus benefits both the person who is facing an acute problem - and the person who is supported by the feedback in bringing their knowledge to the point. We have found that this interplay also reduces the effect of team restraint (social loafing/Ringelmann effect).

  • Insights are obvious when problem awareness meets experience.
  • WiQQi collaboratively deals with problems and topics that are dealt with alone in many places without WiQQi.

From 2015 to 2019, we had the experience that experience in local networks can also be transferred from case to case.   • Similar problems help to accentuate experience.




What is the relationship between citizen science and evidence-based action?

WiQQi is a practice-oriented tool that can be used to systematically create evidence and convert it into practical action. The approach of ready-to-eat knowledge supports evidence-based action in everyday life.

Citizen Science is anchored in the citizenship in the middle of everyday life and can directly observe what institutional science can only do with great effort. Institutional science, on the other hand, takes care of general statements and standards and conclusions, theories and theorems (see Finke 2018, p. 38). With the demand for "ready-to-eat knowledge", WiQQi bundles both internal and external evidence. For this purpose, criteria are being developed that mediate between general rule knowledge and hermeneutic case understanding in the sense of the "Doppelte Handlungslogik" of nursing and care.

  • WiQQi bundles individual experiences from individual cases in the form of criteria.
  • WiQQi breaks down general rule knowledge based on decision-making criteria.
  • With the decision whether and in what form a criterion is used in an individual case, WiQQi maps the "Doppelte Handlungslogik" of nursing and care.
  • This enables WiQQi to support evidence-based care.

Development of WiQQi

Why is WiQQi developed?

The reason for developing WiQQi lies in the knowledge that existing resources can be better used if we develop knowledge together instead of developing it twice.

Cooperation: In historical review, we set the starting point for WiQQi in 2015. We invested around 40 hours in researching and obtaining information about https://www.wiqqi.de/de/study/herdabschaltung in order to generate a first overview of available solutions. In the same year we repeatedly met people and organizations who dealt with the future topic to a similar or lesser extent. The discussion was usually abstract - and in the best case was about constructed "personas" with written life situations. We stopped counting at 100 hours. The end point in 2015 was always the same: the time invested in the research was wasted and the experience developed is not enough for advice that does justice to the complexity of care. This raised the question:

  • What knowledge and experience could we have generated if we had used the >100 hours cooperatively and/or collaboratively?

Starting point - concrete individual case: The answer to this question followed in 2016: In assisted living, an accumulation of false alarms from smoke detectors led to conflicts in the neighborhood, additional risks of falling when trying to switch off the unwanted alarm or nutritional risks from fear, when cooking triggers false alarm. At the same time, a person's wish to silence unwanted alarms from a wheelchair came to us. Even before we deal with the problem ourselves, we received targeted solutions from a craft company. These suggestions were also independently named by a stove cut-out manufacturer that integrated a smoke detector as a smoke sensor into its own product. At this point, the time required for all the people involved to work together is a few minutes. However, we were able to take a concrete solution proposal into the "laboratory". We talked to about 600 people about the smoke detectors related to the "fall risk", "nutritional risk" and "immobility" care problems. In view of the specific individual case, our interlocutors were able to adapt and expand their own experiences, which led to new insights within the group and also for the individual.

  • The situation of the specific individual case assumes the role of the referee and protects against conflicts of different points of view.

Beer mat & advisory concept: We have only had positive experiences with "getting to yes" as an advisory concept. That is why we printed it on a beer mat as a guiding instrument and basic attitude. The space for notes on the one hand illustrates the need to put the specific individual case at the beginning in hermeneutic case understanding. The cornerstones of the concept on the other hand therefore set the basis for clarifying the level of relationships and the common interests. With the search for options for action, hermeneutic case understanding is promoted in a goal-oriented manner. With the ethically and technically reflected, criteria-oriented and reasoned decision, generally applicable rule knowledge is brought together with hermeneutic case understanding: starting from the individual case, the first question is which criteria are relevant for a decision - this is the basis for the selection of solution options by evaluating criteria. WiQQi thus makes a practice-oriented contribution to implementing the "Doppelte Handlungslogik" of nursing and care.

Can WiQQi work?

Yes. WiQQi's approach of sharing knowledge has proven itself in local networks.

WiQQi works in local networks and beyond:

Is there an ethical clearing?

Yes. For WiQQi there is an ethical clearing from the ethics committee of the DGP (German Society for Nursing Science).

WiQQi is being developed as part of the "Citizen Science in Nursing using the example of the development of a technology consulting tool" PhD project. An ethics application was submitted to the Ethics Committee of the DGP (German Society for Nursing Science) on June 8, 31, 2017. Ethical clearing was granted on June 8, 2018.

Is there a development plan?

Yes. The development in WiQQi follows a qualitative-quantitative logic.

Yes. We learned from the network study (2019) that the development of WiQQi can be seen as a continuous change process. With the beta version of WiQQi we meet the express wish of our conversation partners and substantiate our idea of WiQQi. From this common point of view, we are on the way to develop what WE understand by WiQQi:

  • 2020 - Qualitative study: In interviews, the view of WiQQi is recorded from different perspectives and requirements are collected.
  • 2021 - Quantitative study: The impulses from the (few) interviews are validated by many people on the basis of quantitative questionnaires.
  • 2021 - Database development: The impulses confirmed in the quantitative study are implemented.
  • 2022 - Prerelease testing: The practicality of the implemented impulses is tested.

What is the network study?

The network study clarifies (1) the question of how quickly knowledge spreads and invites (2) interested parties to help develop WiQQi.

The network study is a failed attempt to develop WiQQi detached from local networks.

The aim of the network study is to question how quickly knowledge can spread. The respondent driven sampling (RDS, snowball sampling) approach aims to find as many different people as possible who want to participate in the development of WiQQi through interviews or questionaires.

Criterea and ready-to-eat knowledge

What are criteria in WiQQi?

Criteria are descriptive characteristics. They can be used to describe a need or a solution. If the solution has the same characteristics as the demand, we speak of a needs-based solution.

Criteria are measurable or testable descriptive characteristics. They are used in WiQQi to make the knowledge and experience of many "ready to eat", i.e. to be applied ad hoc in a situation.

In WiQQi, criteria have the following tasks:

  • Description: Criteria help to describe problems, objectives, solutions and resources on a case-by-case basis.
  • Bundling: Criteria bundle the knowledge and experience of many.
  • Networking: Criteria network needs (i.e. problems, objeckt and resources) with solutions.
  • Reflection: Criteria support reflection in problem analysis, in the selection of a solution and in the evaluation of objective achievement.
  • Justification: Criteria support the justification of decisions by disclosing the decision-making aspects of a situation.

How are criteria developed?

We develop criteria based on (shared) experiences. Criteria are the answer to the question: Why do I rate something as "good" or "bad"?

Criteria arise from experience in individual cases. Prospectively, thinking ahead, ask about the reasons and conditions that are necessary or sufficient to solve a problem. The results are conceptual, abstract criteria. The retrospective, reflective look leads to concrete criteria.

Criteria are derived from the questions that relate to individual needs:

  • Why exactly do I rate a problem as good or badly solved?
  • Why exactly do I rate a goal as good or bad?
  • Why exactly do I rate a solution as good or bad?
  • Which resources are relevant for the application of a solution?

What influence do criteria have on a decision?

Criteria influence decisions structurally by opening an assessment dimension (but without specifying the direction of the decision).

Criteria combine experience. They offer aspects for which a problem can be analyzed, a solution selected and the achievement of goals evaluated. In addition, they offer opportunities for impartial evaluation and thus initiate a continuous improvement process.

The questions for reflection and the justification based on pre-defined criteria are:

  • Relevance: Which criteria are relevant in the individual need situation?
  • Rating: How can the individual rating be divided into an all-party, i.e. measurable or verifiable description transferred?

Nursing and Care is complex - don´t loose track?

Yes. If the criteria reflect the complexity of the care, we will lose the overview. The clustering of characteristics is one way of restoring the overview. Dynamic associations are a complementary measure.

If we derive criteria from the individual case, we will lose the overview. How exactly we restore the overview is one of the research questions associated with the development of WiQQi. We have found that criteria repeat themselves. This is the basis for the approach of clustering criteria.

We have to weigh up:

  • Precision: How exactly do criteria have to be described in order to achieve useful results?
  • Manageability: How broad can criteria be so that we don't lose track?

In the problem analysis, the criteria are automatically and dynamically made available by the WiQQi database. This results in a supportive assessment path:

  • Extended access: WiQQi can display criteria that are linked to the entered problem and/or goal.
  • Reduced access: WiQQi can represent the criteria that are linked to both the problem entered and the target.
  • Solution-related access: Additional or further restrictive criteria can be used that are critical to the success of the use of certain solutions.

This enables the information required for finding a solution to be collected and specified in a targeted manner. Second visits and disappointments can be reduced.

Is there a practical example for the bundling of criteria?

Yes. We give a practical example of manual power and energy supply. They make us hope that the quality of the bundling and formulation of criteria will level off at a practicable level as the number of cases processed increases.

Criteria emerge from practice and repeat themselves. We expect a finite, manageable number of meta-indicators that can be traced back to the individual in terms of motor skills, cognition and sensory skills. They are reflected in frequently occurring, everyday practical actions and thus in particular in the areas of nutrition, exercise and communication/interaction.

Hand strength

Some goals - but also supposed solutions - require more than can be applied by the user. We met the criterion of manual strength in various individual cases:

  • Unlock the lock or door
  • Trigger nursing call
  • Open the cucumber jar
  • Open cans
  • Clothespin

A first attempt, the experience from different cases leads to the following structure and everyday practical test questions, which can be used both in resource-related needs assessment and to describe a solution. The following questions about the needs assessment also apply to the description of solutions: "All people who can open a water bottle can (in terms of manual strength!) Also use the solution".

  • Can the required force be applied?
    • Can water bottles be opened?
    • Can cucumber jars be opened?
    • Can the door lock be unlocked?
    • Can clothes pegs be pressed together?
    • Can the light switch be operated?
  • Can the required force be transferred sufficiently?
    • Can a water bottle be opened with a handle?
    • Can a mixed pickles jar be opened with a handle?
  • Do pain prevent the necessary force from being applied?
    • Pain occurs when using force.
    • Pain occurs when moving.
    • Pain occurs in certain positions.

On the one hand, across the various individual cases, it can be seen that individual statements are mentioned several times. On the other hand, several criteria are repeatedly effective. The criterion of manual strength is repeatedly linked to the criterion of fine motor skills (unlocking the door, triggering a care call, opening the cucumber jar). This could be used to map items at different levels:

  • to eat and drink
    • Can a water bottle be opened?
    • Due to mobility?
      • Caused by fine and gross motor skills?
      • Due to hand strength?
      • Which of the following activities can be carried out:
        • Open the water tab
        • Open the preserving jar
        • Unlock the door lock
        • Squeeze clothespins
        • Operate the light switch

power supply

The topic of energy supply is important for various solutions (care call, night light, motorized lock, motorized can and glass opener). It leads to the following topics:

  • Power supply failure: What happens if the power fails?
  • Switching on and off: Does a solution have to be switched on and off or brought from standby?
  • Reactivation: Do batteries need to be procured, charged or replaced? Are they available?
  • Explosion hazard: Are there additional risks or fears, for example due to a battery fire?



From our experience, the topic of energy supply could be structured as follows:

The question of what level of detail is necessary concerns the central research question. WiQQi should help to simplify research - but not to make it more complex.

How are criteria rated?

So far, criteria have only been assessed from one perspective; in future, the perspective of many will be mapped. Criteria are assessed as a comprehensible, transparent test or measurement.

Criteria are constructed either as a test or as a measurement. The goal is a transparent and understandable assessment. The evaluation is therefore carried out on the one hand with the test result "Yes", "Conditional" or "No" and on the other hand with the measurement result, which consists of numerical value and measurement variable. In this way, conclusions can be drawn between general results and the individual case.

Three perspectives will be presented separately in the future:

  • Manufacturer or provider of a solution
  • All WiQQi users
  • My ratings

In this way, misunderstandings and misuse of solutions as well as innovations should be made visible and debatable.

How is the data that is collected based on criteria presented?

Criteria are visualized using percentiles and pie charts.

The various data levels that result from test questions and measurements must be taken into account in the presentation. WiQQi uses the descriptive representation with percentiles to give a quick overview of the data. Dichotomous approaches ("Like" or "Dislike") do not do justice to the complexity of care, which is why the triad Yes-Conditional-No is used. Each option can also be commented on. Average values (asterisk rating) would provide supposed clarity. That is why we use percentiles in WiQQi to represent the distribution.

  • Extreme values: The range of the data is shown with the minimum and maximum.
  • Focus: By displaying the 80% of the values that lie between the 10% and 90% percentile, distorting effects of the extreme values can be compensated.
  • Median: The median creates clarity about the existing, symmetrical, left or right skewed distributions.
  • Sample size: The number of data included in the survey is also shown in order to make the scope of the data more transparent.

The question remains open as to how far or at what point in time different test questions can be combined on a scale and thus represent a measuring instrument.



Will data be lost when criteria are merged?

No. We assume that correct clustering also allows the reversibly aggregated presentation of data.

If individual test questions or measurement results are merged into higher-level clusters and are no longer implemented as an individual survey, the question arises: where to with the data?

  • We currently assume that subordinate data can be bundled (we have not yet discussed the mathematical model for this). They can also be placed visually over the data of the cluster. This makes it possible to check whether the results are congruent or whether they have been postponed.
  • The bundling should be reversible. If necessary, the clusters should be able to be dissolved again in order to generate individual statements.


Laboratory process

Laboratory request: What information does WiQQi need?

The type and scope of the information must be justified in consideration of the desired and undesirable effects.

The aim of the laboratory inquiry is to solve a problem together. This requires sharing information. A "too much" as well as a "too little" must be avoided for both the person seeking advice and the community in WiQQi. The "correct amount" of information therefore depends on the individual case.

  • Implicit knowledge is involved when it is difficult to do without gestures when describing a problem or when you have to repeatedly describe the spatial environment or other influences.

Laboratory planning: How are the individual cases prioritized?

The prioritization for processing the laboratories is currently based on the date of receipt.

The aim of laboratory planning is to solve cases in a targeted and predictable manner. Priority can be given according to various criteria: urgency for those affected or carers, number of those affected, number of people who are committed to solving the problem, and how difficult it is to solve a problem.

  • Currently, few cases meet little time for processing. We work through one case at a time.
  • If it means less effort to answer a case immediately than to plan for later, we reserve the right to process the case immediately.

Laboratory and Citizens Laboratory

Cases are currently being processed in the WiQQi studio.

The laboratories are currently being processed on a voluntary basis along with the general development work in WiQQi with a scope of 1-3 days per week.

  • We are currently processing all cases from the WiQQi studio.

Step 1: problem analysis

Problems are the starting point - they illustrate the undesirable.

The aim of the problem analysis is to understand the problem and the associated goal in more detail:

  • Problems are specified: what exactly is the problem, the undesirable? How is it affected?
  • Goals are formulated in a measurable way: Which goal cannot be achieved by the problem? How do I know if I have achieved a goal?
  • To put it positively: From the first impulse that something undesirable should "no longer" be worked out, what exactly should be, or when and how the unwanted disappears.
  • Previous solution: How has the problem been dealt with so far? This gives an initial conclusion about the resources and may help others in a similar situation.

Practical example mixed-pickles jar: We were asked to find a solution for opening a cucumber jar: "It is too difficult".

  • Previous solution: Two people opened the jar together - one person holds the lid, the other the glass.
  • To put it positively: "I can't open it on my own", when asked ("What happens if you open it alone?") Becomes "The jar is slipping in my hand."
  • Problem specification: The mixed pickles jar requires more hand strength / grip to hold than can be applied with one hand alone.
  • Goal: I can open the mixed pickles jar on my own.

Step 2: research

WiQQi shares research results and experiences. In this way, the time for research can be used to update and correct results instead of collecting them twice.

The aim of the research is to diversify the variety of possible solution options. We use different search strategies, different search engines and databases. This process is time-consuming, which is why we document and share research results in WiQQi. This makes documentation and traceability easier. The research raises questions that we want to record as criteria in WiQQi and to answer with experience.

  • The basic idea of WiQQi is to "research" in practical experience. It starts with the solution used so far.

Practical example cucumber jar: In the past, the jar was opened by opening the jar with one hand and opening the lid with the other and turning it against each other.

  • Workaround: The existing solution was to open the cucumber jar with two people: Person 1 holds the jar with two hands, person 2 turns the lid with two hands. ⇒ The applied force and the applied friction have been increased - but also the number of people required and thus undesired dependency.
  • Other approaches:
    • Insert lever: An enlarged lever increases the existing force by turning back more way (e.g. belt wrench, adhesive tape)
    • Reduce effort: By balancing the pressure, the vacuum in the glass is released or reduced or lid friction is reduced, thereby reducing the force required (e.g. hot water application, breaking the vacuum or pressure equalization)
    • Increase friction: By drying / cleaning hands, rubber spacers etc., the friction between hand and glass is increased.
    • Release hand: Clamping and holding devices can also release a hand, so that only the lid or glass has to be held.

Step 3: Precise needs

The criteria from WiQQi should raise questions at the first interview.

We are currently experiencing that research also involves extensive detailed questions. These detailed questions arise from the experience that research brings with it. We can anticipate these questions if we involve an experienced person in the initial interview. The more experience we have bundled in WiQQi, the more inquiries we can anticipate from WiQQi.

  • The basic idea in WiQQi is to simplify advice for all parties by asking as many of the classic inquiries as possible during the initial interview.

Practical example of mixed pickles jar: by trying out the first solution, the first detail-questions have been answered.

  • Pliers solutions: We misunderstood the need at first. The pliers solutions made the requirement that the solution work with only one hand.

tep 4: testing

Affected and interested people evaluate solutions. Together we derive all-party criteria from this rating, which will guide the decision in the next consultation but also in the further research.

While research leads to knowledge through preliminary considerations, physical testing leads to experiences that are connected with further questions. We were able to achieve resounding success with the diversity of perspectives approach. Because different experiences, points of view, actions, but also misunderstandings lead to in-depth knowledge.

  • The basic idea in WiQQi is to gain experience in the laboratory, community laboratory and real laboratory.

Practical example of mixed pickles jar: Testing solutions in different settings led to increased interaction, clarity and goal-oriented knowledge.

  • Pliers solutions: We misunderstood the need at first. The pliers solutions made the requirement that the solution work with only one hand.
  • Base cabinet solution: A base cabinet solution led to the requirement that a tremor should not spill the contents. At the same time, awareness was raised of special needs for shoulders with restricted mobility.
    • At the same time, the functional prototype was developed. We were actually brought over a board with the request to attach the base cabinet solution to the board and to equip this board with a non-slip surface. This impulse for development aroused the memory of the final solution that was found in the follow-up research.
  • Battery: The maintenance effort (but also the volume) of a battery-operated solution led to the requirement of a battery-free solution.
  • Size of the solution: In practical handling, individual solutions were rated as too large for the personal context. In individual cases, however, this criterion was applied in a compromise-friendly manner.
  • Material: The material criterion was raised in the real laboratory. Individuals found it uncomfortable to have another plastic item in the kitchen.
  • Form factor: In the real laboratory, the special need to open oval buckle bottles was converted into the criterion of the form factor.

Result: Knowledge ready to eat

The result of the research is ready-to-eat knowledge in the form of a table that combines solutions and criteria. The knowledge can be updated, supplemented and expanded at any time.

As soon as a solution is found that is appropriate to the needs of the individual case, the further processing of the case is interrupted. The result - ready-to-eat knowledge - can be used in similar cases. The list of solutions can be supplemented and updated by additional research. New criteria can also be added through new cases. In this way, the knowledge in WiQQi can constantly expand and increase. Knowledge grows from case to case - from practical experience.

  • The basic idea in WiQQi is to constantly update and improve the solutions and criteria.
  • The knowledge in WiQQi is thus never conclusive or complete, but sufficient for the individual case.

Evidence durch systematische Evaluation

The evaluation in individual cases takes place immediately after the first application and in routine operation. The evaluation is already fully prepared by the laboratory process.
